The season

A year after losing the 2022 final to Summit, Adam Guenther's Wildcats started 2023 at No. 2 in the OSAAtoday preseason coaches poll with 14 returning starters, led by senior quarterback Kallen Gutridge and junior receiver and safety Mark Wiepert. They opened with a 44-15 home rout of No. 3 Thurston and won at 6A Westview before 6A Tualatin handed them their only loss, 22-13, on Sept. 15.

Wilsonville did not lose again. The Wildcats beat Summit 35-20 a week after the Tualatin game, swept Hillsboro, Southridge and Forest Grove in 5A Special District 1 by a combined 187-42, and beat Canby 49-22 in the league playoff. They finished the regular season No. 1 in the OSAA rankings and earned the top seed for the 5A playoffs.

At home they beat No. 16 Crater 42-7 and No. 8 Thurston 49-21, then held No. 5 Summit to a safety in a 34-2 semifinal win at Willamette University to reach their second straight final. On Nov. 24 at Hillsboro Stadium they beat No. 3 Mountain View 29-23 for a 12-1 season and the program's second state title, its first since 2004, after losing finals in 2016, 2018 and 2022.

Gutridge finished with 3,773 passing yards and 57 touchdown passes, which OSAAtoday listed as No. 7 and No. 2 on Oregon's all-time single-season lists. Wiepert caught 72 passes for 1,460 yards and 20 touchdowns.
