2004 SEASON SUMMARY
The season
A year after losing the 2003 3A final to Marist, George Crace's Wildcats went unbeaten in 2004. They won all 13 games, went 5-0 in 3A Tri-Valley league play and outscored opponents 485-159, an average winning margin of just over 25 points. Only two games were decided by fewer than 14 points: a 41-28 win over La Salle and a 13-0 shutout of Sherwood.
In the playoffs Wilsonville beat Brookings-Harbor, Baker and Sweet Home by a combined 70 points, then met Sherwood again in the state final. The Bowmen led in the third quarter, but the Wildcats pulled away to win 37-13 and claim the program's first state football championship. The defense held Sherwood's running game to 54 yards on 26 carries.
Junior Cameron Smith, a 5-foot-6 running back and receiver who averaged about 10 yards per carry, was named The Oregonian's 3A offensive player of the year, and Crace was named coach of the year. Ten Wildcats made the paper's 3A all-state first team. Crace's son Spencer played quarterback. In 2017 The Oregonian ranked this team 12th among the most dominant state champions in the history of Oregon's second-highest classification.
